Eurasia Leaders Set for Summit in Russia

(MENAFN) A high-stakes diplomatic convergence unfolds in Russia's second-largest city as Eurasian powerbrokers descend for back-to-back summits that could reshape regional trade dynamics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin departs for St. Petersburg on Sunday to chair the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, tackling pressing challenges confronting the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Kremlin announced Saturday.

A landmark commercial pact tops the agenda. "In particular, it is expected that a free trade agreement will be signed between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Republic of Indonesia," the Kremlin statement revealed.

The diplomatic marathon continues Monday when Putin hosts an unofficial Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leadership summit—a traditional gathering now carrying heightened significance.

Multiple regional heads of state have already touched down in Russia ahead of the dual-summit proceedings. Confirmed arrivals include Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are also confirmed attendees.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin plans bilateral discussions with Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during the informal CIS gathering, RIA—Russia's state news outlet—reported Sunday. Azerbaijan has yet to officially verify Aliyev's attendance.

The CIS emerged from the Soviet Union's 1991 collapse as a framework for economic, political, and security coordination. Full membership includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, with Turkmenistan maintaining associate status. Moldova froze its CIS engagement in 2022.

The EAEU operates under a May 2014 treaty that took effect in January 2015. Current members are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.
